Portugal Demographics

Early Settlements
The Portugal settlement patterns date back to Prehistoric times; backed up by cave paintings around the area from the Upper Paleolithic Period. In the west-central part of modern Portugal, many megalithic documents were found, which was dated back to the first conquest of the Roman Empire in Europe.

Many of the Portuguese cities are from the Roman times. In northern Portugal, the settlement started to spread. Most of the buildings from these times were two story buildings with outside staircases. In some places of Portugal, there was a desperate need for food, so the inventions such as waterwheels and fig-drying floors were created. Many farmers at that time moved over to the South, looking for suitable places to settle in the traditional one-story farm houses, near fertile land. This was not an easy task.

Current Times
Even these days, because of the early colonizations of the North, it is much more densely populated than the south. The rural regions of the South have been experiencing major population decrease over the last few years. The coastal regions attracted many people to settle along their borders. Now, the coastal regions are the most populated, and also the most developed, especially the tourist systems.
